Archiving old files

It can be helpful to have the old copies of your files available. Synk's archival feature allows you to keep all of the old copies of files that would otherwise be deleted or overwritten.

To archive old files:

  1. Click on the document's Archive tab
  2. Check the "Archive files overwritten or deleted by Synk" checkbox to enable archiving
  3. In the Finder, create a writable archive folder
  4. Drag the folder onto the text describing the archive folder definition
  5. Select the subfolder option you desire

If the "Archive old files" checkbox is checked but the archive subfolder option is "Never," old files will be moved directly to the defined archive folder. Files are renamed to avoid overwriting existing files. (Filename.txt, Filename-1.txt, Filename-2.txt, etc.)

Subfolders can be created for each day, week or month that the Synk document is run. The folder is created within the defined archive folder and named after the corresponding date. (The last day of the year 2004 would be called 2004-12-31. This format correctly and unambiguously sorts the folders for easy identification.)

Archive subfolders are created with standard permissions so if you don't want people prying, please set the permissions of the defined archive folder appropriately.
